This course provides a broad overview of the stages in child development. Across 9 lectures, it explores several psychoanalytic theories of development and the key developmental stages in a child’s life.

 Course format

This course consists of recorded lectures, a transcript of the lectures and a glossary of terms.

The learning objectives for this course are:

  • To familiarise learners with psychoanalytic theories of Child Development
  • To develop learners’ awareness and understanding of the emotional life of human beings from birth to young adulthood, from a psychoanalytic perspective.
  • To learn what are expected behaviors and emotional reactions at different stages of development, and discuss challenging situations that one may encounter as a parent, a teacher or a health professional

All of the lectures are hosted by members and fellows of the British Psychoanalytical Society.

 About the lecturers

Angela Joyce is a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst with the British Psychoanalytical Society and a Child Psychoanalyst trained at the Anna Freud Centre, London. She now works in private practice in London.
Pina Attinucci is a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society. She trained and worked in London, in private practice and at the Anna Freud Centre. She also taught on the Msc on Psychoanalytic Theories of Child Development, run jointly by the Anna Freud Centre and UCL.
Judith Jackson is an Adolescent and Child Psychoanalyst, and a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Psychoanalysis and works in private practice in London.
Dr. Hannah Browne is a Psychoanalyst and Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Psychoanalysis.
Anne Harrison is a Psychoanalyst in private practice. She is a member of the Institute of Psychoanalysis.
